Hotels open their doors to the gourmet public

Ten Spanish Designations of Origin (DOs) are taking over six five-star hotels in Barcelona for two weeks. The Hotel Wine Fest transforms each establishment into an oenological embassy, featuring pairings designed by resident chefs and open access for the general public.

Six Hotels, Ten DOs: Decentralized Wine Tourism

Barcelona, January 26, 2026

From January 21 to February 4, 2026, Barcelona hosts the third edition of the Hotel Wine Fest, an event that breaks away from the conventional trade fair model. Instead of concentrating the offer in a single venue, the festival distributes tastings across six of the city’s most prestigious hotels: Mandarin Oriental, Monument Hotel, Majestic Hotel & Spa, Cotton House, Almanac, and Grand Hotel Central. Each establishment represents a specific DO, ranging from Cava to Valdeorras, including Penedès and Jumilla.

The initiative aims to remove barriers to entry for luxury spaces. Attendees can choose between two options: a paired tapa (no reservation required) or a full
tasting menu available via online registration. This dual approach caters to both spontaneous visits and planned experiences, appealing to locals and tourists alike. Chefs at each hotel design specific dishes to harmonize with the wines of their assigned DO, utilizing Spanish products and following sustainability criteria.

From Penedès to Galicia: Routes Through Wine Geography

The festival is organized around thematic routes that reflect the diversity of Spanish wine territories. The Catalan Wine Route focuses on indigenous varieties such as Xarel·lo and Garnacha, with guided tasting sessions explaining the distinctive traits of the Mediterranean terroir. Calcareous soils, a sunny climate, and family-owned vineyards with decades of history shape a narrative that goes far beyond the glass.

The DO Cava and DO Penedès share the spotlight with traditional-method sparkling wines and versatile still wines. The pairings leverage the freshness of the whites and the structure of the reds to complement contemporary Mediterranean cuisine.

Conversely, DO Valdeorras brings an Atlantic character with Godello and Mencía—two varieties noted for their minerality and fresh profile. Events related to this DO include pairings with Galician gastronomy adapted to the codes of urban haute cuisine.

Awards and Public Recognition with Media Impact

The festival features two awards that measure the success of the pairings from different perspectives. The “Alimentos de España” Pairing Award, granted by a professional jury from the Ministry of Agriculture, evaluates creativity and the harmony between wine and dish. The People’s Choice Pairing Award depends on the votes of attendees, who participate through the official website and receive an official tote bag as an incentive.

The winning hotels gain significant visibility at Barcelona Wine Week, which takes place immediately after the festival, along with promotion in specialized media. This recognition not only rewards the work of the kitchen and sommelier teams but also reinforces the brand image of the participating DOs.

The ultimate goal is clear: to turn every visit into a memorable experience that generates brand advocacy and fosters loyalty toward specific labels and establishments.
